Sewage cleanup in 30 seconds

  • What it is: Sewage is IICRC Category 3 water, the most contaminated class. It carries bacteria, viruses, parasites and chemical waste, and it turns any clean water it touches into Category 3 too.
  • Who does it: Mr. Restore's IICRC-certified crews in full PPE, dispatched 24/7 from five offices in Lewisville, Dallas, McKinney, Amarillo and Bethany, Oklahoma, with a 60-minute arrival guarantee.
  • What it costs: Sewage cleanup typically runs $3,000 to $10,000 for a single bathroom or small affected area, and $10,000 to $30,000 or more for whole-house contamination. Sewer backup is covered by most homeowner policies only with the sewer and drain backup endorsement, and we check your declarations page on the first call.
  • How long: Extraction and disinfection in 1 to 3 days, drying in 3 to 5 days, reconstruction from 1 to 3 weeks for a bathroom to 3 to 8 weeks for a whole house.
  • What to do now: Keep people and pets out of the affected area, don't run water or flush, don't use a household vacuum, and call (877) 631-7576.

Why Sewage Damage Needs Hazmat Protocols, Not Just Drying

Clean water from a burst supply line and gray water from a dishwasher can often be extracted and dried in place. Sewage cannot. Raw sewage and sewer backups contain E. coli, salmonella, hepatitis A, norovirus, parasites and the chemicals that go down every drain. Porous materials that Category 3 water touches, drywall, insulation, carpet and pad, fabric and often wood subfloor, cannot be reliably disinfected and must be removed under IICRC S500 protocol. Non-porous materials such as tile, sealed concrete, glass and metal can be cleaned, disinfected and saved.

The health risk doesn't stop at the water line. Sewage aerosolizes. Without negative-air containment and HEPA filtration, contaminants spread through the HVAC system into rooms the water never reached. That's why our sewage crews set containment first and extract second.

Where Sewage Backups Come From in Texas and Oklahoma

  • Cast-iron drain lines from the 1950s to 70s. Original cast iron in Dallas, Richardson, Garland, Fort Worth, Denton and Amarillo neighborhoods corrodes, scales and collapses. The backup arrives in the lowest tub, shower or floor drain.
  • Tree roots. Live oaks, pecans and elms find joints in clay and cast-iron laterals. Roots block the line and every flush pushes sewage back into the house.
  • City main surcharges. Heavy spring storms overload combined and aging municipal mains, and the surcharge comes up through floor drains in homes that never had a plumbing problem.
  • Lift station and grinder pump failures. Common in lake communities and low-lying subdivisions around Lake Lewisville, Lake Ray Hubbard and Lake Ray Roberts.
  • Grease traps and commercial kitchens. Restaurants and multi-tenant buildings back up into dining rooms, neighboring suites and floors below.
  • Septic failures. Rural Denton, Collin, Rockwall and Panhandle properties on septic systems flood tanks and drain fields after heavy rain.

Our 7-Step EPA-Compliant Sewage Cleanup Process

  1. Call (877) 631-7576. A live person answers 24/7, checks your policy for sewer backup coverage, and dispatches the nearest crew.
  2. Arrival within 60 minutes and containment. Full PPE, negative-air containment and HEPA air scrubbers before anything is touched, so contamination doesn't spread through the house.
  3. Extraction. Truck-mounted extraction of sewage and standing water, with safe disposal.
  4. Removal of contaminated materials. Drywall, insulation, carpet and pad, and other porous materials that contacted Category 3 water, removed and bagged per IICRC S500. Everything photographed for your claim.
  5. Disinfection. EPA-registered disinfectants and antimicrobial treatment on every surface and cavity the water reached, including subfloor and framing.
  6. Structural drying. Industrial air movers and dehumidifiers with daily moisture readings and a written dry log until the structure reads dry.
  7. Reconstruction. Drywall, flooring, trim, cabinets and fixtures restored to pre-loss condition by the same team, and a final air-quality and moisture sign-off.

Sewage Cleanup Cost

Sewage cleanup typically ranges from $3,000 to $10,000 for a single bathroom or small affected area, and $10,000 to $30,000 or more for whole-house contamination. The main cost drivers are how far the water spread, how long it sat, and how much porous material has to be removed and rebuilt.

SituationTypical cost
Single bathroom or small area, caught quickly$3,000–$10,000
Multiple rooms or a finished basement$8,000–$20,000
Whole-house contamination with rebuild$10,000–$30,000+
Commercial kitchen or multi-unit backupAssessed on site; large-loss documentation provided

Free on-site assessments. Standard homeowner policies typically exclude sewer backup unless you carry the sewer and drain backup endorsement, which usually costs $50 to $250 a year; most commercial policies include it. We review your declarations page on the first call and work the claim either way. See the water damage restoration cost guide for the full 2026 price breakdown.

Sewage Cleanup FAQ

Is sewage cleanup dangerous?

Yes. Sewage is IICRC Category 3 (black water) containing pathogenic bacteria, viruses, parasites, and biological contaminants. Do not attempt DIY cleanup. Mr. Restore technicians are equipped with full PPE, EPA-registered disinfectants, and HEPA filtration. Call (877) 631-7576 24/7.

How much does sewage cleanup cost?

Sewage cleanup typically ranges from $3,000 to $10,000 for a single bathroom or small affected area, and $10,000 to $30,000+ for whole-house contamination. Most homeowners policies cover sewage backup if you have the optional endorsement. We verify coverage and bill insurance directly.

Is sewage backup covered by insurance?

Standard homeowners policies typically exclude sewage backup unless you've added the sewer/drain backup endorsement (usually $50 to $250 per year). Commercial policies often include it. Mr. Restore reviews your declarations page during the initial call and works the claim regardless.

Can sewage-contaminated materials be saved?

IICRC S500 protocol requires demolition of porous materials directly contacted by Category 3 water (drywall, insulation, carpet pad, fabric, wood subfloor in some cases). Non-porous materials (tile, sealed concrete, glass, metal) can usually be cleaned, disinfected, and saved. We document everything photographically for insurance.

How long does sewage cleanup take?

Initial extraction and disinfection takes 1 to 3 days. Drying takes 3 to 5 days. Reconstruction depends on demolition scope, typically 1 to 3 weeks for a single bathroom and 3 to 8 weeks for whole-house contamination. We provide written timelines after on-site assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Expert answers about water damage, fire damage, and restoration costs
Water damage restoration typically costs between $400 and $20,000+, with most residential projects averaging $2,500–$7,500. Cost depends on the water category (clean, gray, or black water), affected square footage, number of rooms, severity of structural damage, and whether mold remediation is needed. Emergency water extraction alone ranges from $500–$3,000. Mr. Restore provides free on-site assessments and works with all major insurance carriers. Try our free Water Damage Cost Estimator for a personalized estimate.
Mr. Restore provides 60-minute emergency response across all five locations — Dallas, Lewisville/Denton County, McKinney, Amarillo, and Oklahoma City. Our 24/7 dispatch operates 365 days a year. IICRC-certified technicians arrive with truck-mounted extraction equipment, commercial dehumidifiers, and thermal imaging cameras ready to begin immediate mitigation. Every hour of delay increases total restoration costs by 10–15%.
Most homeowner insurance policies cover sudden and accidental water damage (burst pipes, appliance failures, storm damage) and fire damage restoration. Gradual damage from maintenance neglect is typically not covered, and flood damage requires separate NFIP flood insurance. Mr. Restore is pre-approved with all major carriers including Allstate, State Farm, Nationwide, Farmers, USAA, and Liberty Mutual. We handle all insurance documentation — moisture maps, thermal imaging, photos, and line-item scopes — and bill your insurance carrier directly so you pay nothing out of pocket beyond your deductible.
Mr. Restore operates five locations across Texas and Oklahoma: Lewisville (serving Denton County and northwest DFW), McKinney (serving Collin County and northeast DFW), Dallas (serving Dallas County, Tarrant County, and Rockwall County), Amarillo (serving the Texas Panhandle), and Oklahoma City (serving the OKC metro including northeast and southwest communities). Combined, we serve 60+ cities with 60-minute emergency response.
Mold can begin growing within 24–48 hours after water damage occurs. In the Dallas-Fort Worth and Oklahoma City humidity, this timeline can accelerate to as little as 12 hours during summer months. Professional water damage restoration within the first 24 hours dramatically reduces mold risk and can save $5,000–$15,000+ in future mold remediation costs. DIY fans and towels only remove surface moisture — hidden water behind walls, under flooring, and in HVAC systems requires professional-grade extraction and psychrometric drying verification.
Mr. Restore provides comprehensive emergency restoration services including: water damage restoration and water extraction, fire and smoke damage restoration, storm and wind damage repair, sewage cleanup and remediation, biohazard remediation, and contents restoration. All services are available for both residential and commercial properties. Our IICRC-certified technicians hold WRT, FSRT, ASD, AMRT, and CDSM credentials.
Still have questions? Our restoration experts are available 24/7.
📞 Call (877) 631-7576
Call a licensed restoration company right away — a plumber stops the leak, but only a restoration crew extracts the water and dries the structure. Mr. Restore operates an Amarillo office serving Potter and Randall counties and the Texas Panhandle, answers 24/7 at (877) 631-7576, and guarantees arrival within 60 minutes.
Look for a local crew, IICRC certification and direct insurance billing. Mr. Restore staffs a physical Amarillo office rather than dispatching from out of town, is IICRC certified in WRT, FSRT and ASD, has operated since 2008, holds a BBB A+ rating since 2015, and bills all major insurance carriers directly.
Mr. Restore performs emergency water extraction throughout Amarillo, Canyon and the Texas Panhandle using truck-mounted extractors and commercial air movers. Emergency extraction alone typically ranges from $500 to $3,000 depending on water volume and category. Extraction should begin within hours, because standing water starts causing mold growth within 24 to 48 hours.
Ceiling water damage needs a restoration company rather than a drywall contractor, because the cavity above the ceiling has to be dried before any repair. Mr. Restore locates the source with thermal imaging, dries the cavity, then repairs and repaints. Single-room ceiling repairs in Amarillo typically run $400 to $1,500.

My claim is still ongoing (over a year now) but not because my house isn't repaired from the flood that happened on 2 Jan 2024! Mr. Restore's mitigation and pack-out teams were quick, efficient, and empathetic. They even went above and beyond when I was needing to travel internationally and had accidentally left my passport on a nightstand that got packed up; they took the challenge on the DAY of my travel to find the box and Patrick Noble personally brought me my passport at the airport and I made my flight - unheard of. When it came time to start repairing things, Sean Beattie really took it to the next level - he handled everything and kept my stress level so low given the situation! Where typically I would have expected to have to expend more energy, Sean was responsive, proactive, and incredibly understanding and helpful with all my feedback or asks. I would recommend Mr. Restore over and over again (hopefully you don't need them, but in case you do!), not just for the quality of work and attention, but for the quality humans they employ and how much they really do seem to care.

I had a leak in my roof after some recent heavy storms, and Mr. restore immediately came out and addressed the problem. I could not be more pleased, from the second the representative showed up within 30 minutes their crew was working on removing the soaked drywall and affected areas. They also neatly stacked the contents of our garage in the attic so we could still use the garage to protect our vehicles. And their follow-up has been phenomenal. They far exceeded my expectations. Highly recommended!

Mr Restore got to my home in 30 minutes. Mitigated the damage across the course of the week communicating directly with my insurer and emailing me daily progress reports on our $73,000 loss. They made the experience of water damage throughout my home so much easier to work through. We had friends with a burst pipe weeks later and nearly similar conditions use a different company who left in under 3 days resulting in their adjuster calling in a second mitigation company to finish the job. Me Restore was respectful of my home, my time, my need for communication and so much more. Thanks!

I called asking for prices, and Clint told me how I could easily fix the situation myself. Everything he said to do worked. In fact I only needed to do half of it!! He saved me tons of money and did not even make a dime. Btw, I checked what it would cost to rent the items from Home Depot and do the full shebang myself if I chose to do it the long way, and the rentals would've cost twice as much (me doing labor) as the prices he quoted if he and his team were to do it (including labor)!! His prices are actually way better than I could have gotten doing the labor myself. I will 100% hire these people next time I have any issues. Thank you so much Clint!!

On Thursday June 2, 2022 our church had standing water in our sanctuary along the a wall and in front of the stage due to heavy rains. I called Mr Restore in the morning and within minutes received a call from Patrick who indicated they would be out to assess within the hour. In 30-40 minutes Patrick and his crew were there and immediately started the water evacuation process and set up all the equipment to control the humidity and mitigate any mold and bacteria that could happen. They worked long and hard to get the sanctuary dry and ready for church services Sunday am. Everyone that worked on the job, including office personal with insurance and billing, was very courteous. respectful and professional. They followed up Monday to reset their equipment to continue the drying process. So happy I chose this firm at this location. Highly recommend them.

When my laundry room flooded on a Sunday afternoon, Mr. Restore answered the phone the first time I called, and they were at my house within 2-3 hours. They took thermal readings and moisture levels, and what impressed me the most is they told me what equipment to rent and where to place it in order for me to save money based on my circumstances. Hope and Russell were both great to work with. They came back out in 4 days, took additional readings, and told me I could return the rental equipment. Hopefully I never have another flood, but I would definitely use Mr. Restore in the future if necessary and will refer Mr. Restore to friends and neighbors. They were very informative, honest, and easy to work with.
