How To Keep Your Home Safe While Social Distancing

With COVID-19 precautions in full swing, it is likely that you and your family are practicing social distancing. This means working from home and staying inside as much as possible. During these uncertain times, Mr Restore encourages you to take this time to relax, learn a new skill, spend quality time with your family and be sure to get outside for fresh air.

You could also use this time to catch up on any home maintenance you may not have had time for before. While staying home, there are many things that you can check for around the house to be sure your home is not at risk for potential fire and water damage. If you are looking for something to do, walk around your home and complete the following tasks:

1. Check Under All Sinks For Leaks

It is easy to forget about what goes on underneath your sinks. The pipes are tucked behind cabinets or walls, making it hard to notice any leaks or problems. Unnoticed leaks can lead to serious water damage and mold. Dark damp places, like underneath the sink, are the perfect breading ground for mold. Be sure to check for any dark water spots and mold growth under all bathroom, kitchen, and other sinks.

2. Check All Wires and Cords

Frayed or broken cords are the leading cause of electrical fires. Walk around your home and check all electrical cords that are beings used. Check to be sure extension cords are being used properly and that outlets are not overwhelmed with too many devices. Do not use cords or wires that appear to be frayed or damaged. They pose a huge fire risk and should be thrown away.

3. Check All Appliances For Leaks

Dishwashers, washing machines, and HVAC units are often sneaky culprits of water damage. If they are malfunctioning, it can often go unnoticed for some time. Mr Restore has responded to homes that have flooded kitchens and laundry rooms due to broken appliances. Look underneath and around these appliances for leaks for signs of mold and mildew. This is an indicator that the appliances are broken and need to be repaired.

You should also check to be sure that you are using the correct type of soap in your appliances. Using the wrong detergent in your dishwasher and washing machine can also lead to broken appliances and serious water damage.

4. Check All Smoke Alarms

Now that you and your family are home more often, you are likely lighting candles, using appliances and cooking from home more often. Constant use of these items poses a fire risk. It is vital that you check all smoke alarm batteries to be sure that they are working properly.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, you should be checking your smoke alarms once per month. You should be able to hear the alarm loudly and clearly. Every floor in your home should have a smoke detector, but more that you have, the safer your home will be.

Mr Restore wishes everyone in Texas to stay safe and practice healthy living during these uncertain times. Mr Restore is on the frontlines throughout COVID-19.
